City of Oxford SC swimmers were in sensational form at the culmination of the short course season, the ASA National Winter Championships, held in Sheffield from 17th to 20th December. Leading the way with 2 gold medals and one silver medal was 15 year old Connor Bryan. Bryan’s National Junior titles came in the 50m (29.61) and 100m (1.03.92) breaststroke events and his silver medal in the 200m breaststroke (2.18.47). Bryan’s times saw him break the Welsh Junior Record in each event, with his 200m time also an Oxfordshire & North Buckinghamshire Junior County Record. Bryan’s closest competitor was teammate Callum Smart with 2 silver medals in the 50m (29.70) and 100m (1.04.23) breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 200m breaststroke (2.19.01).
In the Open category 16 year old David Murphy took silver in the 100m breaststroke, breaking the 1 minute barrier with a time of 59.54, a new County Record. Murphy also made the final of the 50m and 200m breaststroke, with his 200m time, 2.13.53, also a new County Record.
Further County Records came in the men’s Open 400m Individual Medley by Fabian Whitbread (4.19.96), the women’s Junior 50m fly by Ellie Millington (28.21) and the women’s Junior 200m breaststroke by Emily Wood (2.29.70).
Other City swimmers to qualify for the ASA Winter Nationals were Natasha Fenton, Emily Ford, Maia Little, Annie Sharp, Ewan Springett, Emily Nisbet, Kate Mills, Eleanor McNally, Shannon Motha and Lizzie Oliver. All swimmers gained great experience competing at a very competitive nationals.
