City of Oxford Swimming Club’s male breaststrokers dominated the third weekend of the Oxon and North Bucks County Championships by taking the top 4 places in the Open County 200m breaststroke championship. Fabian Whitbread won the Men’s Open Championship title in a county record time of 2.13.67 with 16 year old David Murphy taking silver in 2.17.59.
An impressive swim from 14 year old Callum Smart won bronze in a meet best time for his age group of 2.23.80, a time that also gave him gold in the Junior County Championship (16yrs and under) and shoots him to the top of the British rankings for 14 year olds. Team mate Connor Bryan, also 14 years old, was 4th in the Open which gave him silver in the Junior Championship in a time of 2.29.20. In the Men’s Open 50m breaststroke Championship, Murphy and Whitbread again occupied the top podium places with Murphy taking gold in 29.20 and Whitbread silver in 29.39. Callum Smart took the Junior County Championship gold in 31.28.
Not to be outdone, City’s female breaststrokers also showed their class with15 year old Emily Wood taking silver in the Women’s Open Championship in 1.11.40, a meet best time for her age group that also won her gold in the Junior championship. 12 year old Natasha Fenton, who qualified for the British Championships at the London Aquatic Centre in the same event last weekend, posted an impressive 1.14.73 in the heats and went on to win gold in her age group final. Fenton’s heat time was also a meet best time and puts her 2nd in the British rankings for her age group.
City continued their sparkling form with 14 year old Annie Sharp taking bronze in the Women’s Open 200m backstroke championship in 2.17.35, a time that also gave her gold in the Junior Championship. Team mate Jess Ramsay joined her on the Junior Championship podium with silver, in 2.18.92. 15 year old Emily Nisbet won gold in the girls’ junior 200m individual medley championship in 2.22.22 as well as silver in the junior 100m freestyle, 58.70 and bronze in the junior 100m breaststroke championship, 1.15.00. Fabian Whitbread showed his class across all the strokes with 2.05.60 giving him silver in the Men’s Open 200m butterfly championship and Lucy Smith took the Women’s Open 100m freestyle silver medal in 57.69. Maia Little won silver in the junior 100m breaststroke (1.14.30), Ellie Millington won bronze in both the girl’s 50m butterfly (29.00) and 100m freestyle (58.85) junior championship and Ewan Springett took bronze in the boys’ junior 50m freestyle in 25.46.
The club’s relay teams were also in medal winning form with the girls’ 16 and under 400m medley relay team of Annie Sharp, Emily Wood, Emily Nisbet and Ellie Millington smashing the junior county record in 4.21.97 and taking top spot on the podium. Team mates Rachel Allen, Maia Little, Olivia Webster and Amy Coombes beat off tough competition to take silver in 4.28.84. Millington, Coombes, Webster and Nisbet also won gold in the 16 and under 200m freestyle relay in 1.50.49. City’s B team of Jess Ramsay, Sharp, Alissa Clarke and Allen took bronze in 1.53.73.
In the Women’s Open 400m medley relay competition Shannon Motha, Emily Wood, Daniella Springett and Lucy Smith won gold in 4.20.56 with silver going to Annie Sharp, Eleanor McNally, Kate Mills and Lizzie Oliver, 4.25.06. McNally, Oliver, Springett and Smith also won silver in the Women’s Open 200m freestyle relay in 1.48.01.
The men’s relay team of David Murphy, Fabian Whitbread, Christopher Wood and Ewan Springett won silver in both the Men’s Open 400m freestyle relay in 3.37.35 and the 200m medley relay championship events.
In the men’s multi-classification disability events Chris Currie won gold in the 50m freestyle (29.30), 200m freestyle (2.16.18) and 100m backstroke (1.19.23).
In addition to the Open and Junior Championship titles City’s swimmers also won a total of 32 gold, 29 silver and 19 bronze medals in the Age Group Competitions this weekend. Top medal winners in the age groups were 10 year old Freddie Cooke with a total of 5 golds and 2 silvers; Evie McLean, also 10 years old, with 3 golds and 1 silver and Chiara De Vita, 13 year old, with 3 golds.
