To quote Louise Mclean’s Twitter post “Everyone loves Coach Liz’s holiday themed challenges!!”, and we couldn’t agree more. The Academy Swimmers from AC1 to 4 were in the pool bright and early and ready for some Easter Fun in the Chicks vs Bunnies vs Baa Lambs Easter Relays on Saturday morning. Everyone was in the spirit for Easter with Coach Liz and the officials all wearing their Easter bonnets, ears and #RagingBulls t-shirts to support our swimmers going to the National Arena Swimming League Cup Final.
Team tactics were discussed with the Team Managers and swimmers were selected by the team captains to give their teams the best chance in the twenty events ahead. The atmosphere in the Headington School pool was loud and energetic throughout all the races and showed how each team was supporting one another no matter what position they finished. The relays ranged from the traditional 4 x 25m Freestyle to the Easter themed 8 x 25m Pass the Bonnet Long Doggy Paddle, 6 x 25m Water Polo Egg Race and the 6 x 25m Egg & Spoon Race.
You could tell that we had some eagle-eyed officials at this Easter Gala, as Baa Lambs lost six crucial points after being DQ in the Boys 50m Breastroke and the Mixed 4 x 25m Breastroke Relay, looks like Liz will be focusing on Breastroke turns and starts at the next training session for those swimmers who were in team Baa Lambs.
If there is one race that stands out, it must be the 6 x 25m Water Polo Egg Race. Team Chicks lead this race from the start and at one point had a 25m lead other the other teams. Sadly, in the final 25m leg of the relay, the egg (ball) was lost and ended up in the Baa Lambs lane. Giving the advantage to the other teams and resulting in Team Chicks finishing third.
As we finished Event 19 the Chicks had a one point lead over the Baa Lambs and a seven point lead over the Bunnies. However, all was not lost as they entered the final event and took part in the mixed Easter Egg hunt.
Event 20 saw Chicks finish first, Baa Lambs second and Bunnies third. But the final points were still not decided as the number of eggs in each team’s basket could change the score and final positions. The eggs were counted and the points totaled up and we can confirm that in first place with 61 points were team Chicks, second with 56 points were the Baa Lambs and third with 51 points were the Bunnies. Well done to all that took part and thank you to all of the parents and most importantly Coach Liz who made the Easter Relays so much fun.
Happy Easter Everyone.
