MURPHY QUALIFIES FOR WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
City of Oxford’s old boy, Alex Murphy, now swimming for University College Dublin, triumphed at the Irish Championships held in Dublin last weekend. Murphy, who swam with City of Oxford for a year before heading off to university, swam an incredible 50m breaststroke in 27.56 seconds to win gold and book his place on the Irish team heading to the World Swimming Championships in Kazan, Russia in July this year. Murphy was thrilled by his convincing victory and followed it up by winning gold in the 100m breaststroke in a World Championship considered time of 1.02.41.
Although the 50m breaststroke is not an Olympic event Murphy’s UCD coach, Earl McCarthy, said with his continued improvement he is fast becoming a strong contender to join the Irish team for the 100m breaststroke at the Rio Olympics in 2016.
