Five City of Oxford SC swimmers qualified for the recent British Swimming Championship held at the London Aquatics Centre from 14th to 18th April 2015. The Championship is the biggest domestic competition of the swimming year and acts as the main qualifying event for the World Championships, European Junior Championships and the European Youth Olympics.
Day 1 saw 15 year old Emily Nisbet qualify from the morning heats for the Women’s Junior 200m Butterfly final, which acted as the qualifying event for the European Junior Championship, whilst Fabian Whitbread and 16 year old David Murphy competed in the Men’s 200m breaststroke.
Day 2 saw 15 year old Emily Wood qualify for the Junior Final in the Women’s 200m breaststroke. Wood’s morning swim of 2.34.74 was a South East Regional Age Group Record and Oxfordshire & North Bucks Junior County Record (records to be ratified). 12 year old Natasha Fenton also competed in the Women’s 200m breaststroke, with Whitbread also in action in the Men’s 200m individual medley.
On day 4 Wood and Fenton competed in the Women’s 100m breaststroke, with Fenton missing out on a place in the Qualifying Final for the Youth Olympics by just 0.01second. Murphy competed in the Men’s 100m breaststroke becoming the third Oxford swimmer to make a final, qualifying for the Men’s Junior Final. The event saw Adam Peaty break the world record in 57.92, the first man ever to swim under 58 seconds in the men’s 100m breaststroke. Whitbread competed in the Men’s 400m individual medley and Nisbet completed the Oxford swims on day 5 competing in the Women’s 400m individual medley.
