Three City of Oxford swimmers travelled to Barcelona on January 15th to compete in the Catalonian Open Swimming Championships. Fabian Whitbread, Elizabeth Oliver and Lucy Smith joined a team of twenty swimmers selected from across the South East Region to gain experience at international competition against some of Spain’s top swimmers. City’s Head Coach, Amanda Booth, was also invited to be one of two coaches to the team.
City’s trio performed well with Smith winning bronze in the women’s 4 x 200m freestyle relay team and qualifying for individual finals in the 200m freestyle, 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly. Whitbread qualified for the Men’s 200m breaststroke final and just missed out on a place on the podium taking 4th place in 2.22.63. He followed this up with 6th place in both the men’s 400m and 200m individual medley events. Oliver also made the women’s 200m and 400m individual medley finals.
