One week after competing in the National Arena Swimming League Cup Final and finishing sixth, many of our swimmers are preparing for three key events on the calendar in Loughborough, Swansea and Sheffield.
The Great Britain Deaf Swimming Club’s National Club Championships & Deaflympic Squad Camp is taking place at the University of Loughborough Pool from the 14th to the 16th April. Libby Gotta and her sibling Lucy Gotta, Lily Cooke and her siblings Theo Cooke and Freddie Cooke will be training on Friday night and Sunday. In-between all the training they will take part in the National Club Championships Gala on Saturday. Hearing siblings are also invited to train and compete in a 50m mixed free race.
In 2016 Libby Gotta, competing in the 11years and under category, won an incredible 5 gold medals in the 50m butterfly, 50m backstroke, 50m breaststroke, 50m freestyle and 100m butterfly. The 100m butterfly also saw her pick up a new British age group deaf record. Lucy also took silver in the 100m breaststroke and 200 individual medley.
Lily Cooke, 9 years old, gained personal best times in all of her events.
Swim Wales Long Course Championships is a level 1 Closed Long Course (50m) meet aimed at top ranking swimmers including para-swimmers. City of Oxford Swimming Club has two swimmers Cathryn Peake and Megan Peake entering this weekend, they will be participating in 5 events each over four days at the Wales National Pool in Swansea. We wish Cathryn and Megan good luck as they compete and represent City of Oxford Swimming Club.
The British Swimming Championships 2017 is the highlight of the national events calendar. As British Swimming enters a new Olympic cycle, athletes who shone at Rio 2016 will be taking to the pool again for the title of British Champion, as well as there being a new focus on the next group of athletes to rise to the challenge and take the top performances.
Good luck to our 8 Oxford qualifiers competing at this event from April 18-23rd 2017 at Ponds Forge Pool. Emily Wood, Emily Ford, Maia Little, Tash Fenton, Connor Bryan, Callum Smart, Toby Mackay-Champion and David Murphy will be competing across 17 events, all breaststroke and 1 fly! The whole event will be live streamed – watch our swimmers racing alongside Adam Peaty MBE and Ross Murdoch and a host of aspiring swimmers.
